"Australian Barbaric Death Metal" at least that is what Cemetery Urn has dubbed themselves. It must be an Australian thing because last year I saw Disentombed in concert and they call their particular style Australian Brutal Death... Apparently every death metal band from down under feels the need to create their own sub-genre for their specific music. I suppose when you come from a place with bugs the size of small dogs and Crocodile Dundee you can do whatever the fuck you want... But I digress...
Over the years it seems like most of the death metal acts have gone out of their way to make the vocals as completely and totally guttural and as possible. Call me old fashion but listening to an entire album of monotone growl/puking into a microphone that sounds like it's lodged in your throat eventually gets a little boring. I don't care how fucking awesome your music is or how fast you play if the only other sound is Cookie Monster taking a shit for 60+ minutes I'm going to get bored pretty quick. Don't get me wrong I love some good growling but put some fucking inflection into it once and a while for fucks sake. So with that off my chest you will be glad to know that you aren't getting any of that shit from Cemetery Urn.
Musically I would put them somewhere in the realm of Gorgasm. Chris Volcano's vocals are guttural but it's a raw and natural growl that allows for more than just flat monochromatic grunts and for myself personally it's a breath of fresh air in a somewhat stagnant genre. On the instrument side of things I couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic when I listened to this album. A lot of the hooks and riffs are pretty classic sounding and from time to time you get a really brutal guitar solo that wouldn't be out of place on an old Motorhead album.
At the end of the day I don't think Cemetery Urn is really breaking any new ground here or creating anything so unique that it requires a sub-sub-genre known as "Australian Barbaric Death Metal" but they aren't doing anything wrong ether. This is definitely worth checking out and if you are looking for something that breaks the current trends in the death metal genre or just looking to expand your music library with a good album that you can listen to from beginning to end I would definitely recommend picking up Cemetery Urn on the 9th of June.
