Cthuluminati - Madness from Netherlands

H.P. Lovecraft stories in heavy metal music aren't anything new. In fact next to Satan I would be willing to bet that Cthulhu probably is a close second in getting the most play in the occult/death/black metal music world. Not that I have any problem with that since I'm a lifelong fan of Lovecraft and his various works. So when I was contacted by Cthuluminati I was pumped as hell to check out their music. It was definitely worth it!

Of course one of the first questions I had for the guys in Cthuluminati was how the hell they came up with a name like this in the first place. Hiss Squidniss (Devi) - Vocals, Guitar and Percussion provided me with the following answer...

"We wanted to tell stories Based on Lovecraft's mythos as well as conspiracy theories. At first Calarami (guitar) came up with it as a joke, but we all were very enthusiastic about it, so we decided to go on with it."

You can't argue with that kind of logic.

Cthuluminati has been around since February of 2015 crafting a unique style of Psychedelic/Doom/ Black/Sludge metal that you have to experience to fully appreciate. Inspired by likes of Oranssi Pazuzu, Swans, Deathspell Omega and Hail Spirit Noir they are blazing their own trail of mayhem and madness in the underground. The current lineup for Cthuluminati is...

Hiss Squidniss (Devi) - Vocals, Guitar, Percussion
Calarami (Rami) - Lead Guitar
Tentaclausz (Strausz) - Bass
Rick Lieffering (session) - Drums

The band is currently working on a full length debut album but they have been releasing singles and short videos via YouTube for a while now. Obviously when you find a band like Cthuluminati you have a few questions. So of course I had to ask what their music was all about.

We believe that way too many artists conform to predictable song structures and other ways to write music. We wanted to do something new, as well as for the songwriting process, as well as for the themes, sound and live shows. We write fictional short stories, one for each song. So our first album will be released as an actual book, containing the CD. We want to make psychedelic music that doesn't follow too many rules. Our style is rather eclectic, but the main thing is our theme (Cthulhu and conspiracy theories). We are building on our live shows with lot's of visual extras to take our fans with us to another dimension. We try to evolve with every new content we release.

A nearly perfect example of this is Cthuluminati's latest release A Thin Line.

Not only do you get a free song from the band but you can email them at cthuluminati@gmail.com for a free copy of the ebook that tells the story behind the song. Which is pretty fucking awesome if you ask me.

Some black metal "purists" might not find Cthuluminati all that great because they are clearly going way WAY outside the box with a lot of their style. But when it comes to all around creativity and artistic expression... musically, artistically, visually and even in their live performances you honestly can't ask for more than Cthuluminati... I'm just pissed I don't live close enough to these guys to catch a live show.
