  ASARMOTH is the new solo project from Gigi Casini the former Bass/Vocalist of the Italian Death Metal band MIND SNARE. Casini's new project merges the influences of early 80's extreme metal acts like Venom, Bathory and Celtic Frost with early death metal bands like Obituary, Deicide, Morbid Angel and Death Vader. Princess of the Darkness is an interesting blend of old school metal and death metal with a toned down driving bass and drum line that runs thought the album tying all the tracks together like a brooding death march. Casini has done some interesting stuff on this album and incorporated some elements that you don't often hear in metal. Listening to this album for the first time I picked up a slight prog-metal  influence on a few of the tracks with echo effects and what sounds like a simple yet classic keyboard synthesizer. Maybe I'm just a sucker for folk/Nordic inspired black metal, but when it's done as well as what Haljōrūna is offering who can argue with it. An interesting mix of clean and black metal vocals with a slow driving beat to the music really sets the mood for their entire Midvinterblot album.  Midtvinterblot by Haljōrūna By far my favorite track on the album is Urds Kjelde but the rest of the album isn't lacking in any regard. The marching beat of this track blended with the keyboards and drums is a perfect merger of folk and metal that few bands nail as successfully as  Haljōrūna. Snooping around over on Soundcloud today and discovered Decoherence. Not a lot of info on them at the moment but they have several songs posted and they are all heavy as hell with a great wall of sound depth and complexity that I fucking love. Hope to hear more from this band/artist.

Sometimes it's hard to find a band in the prog/deathcore scene that is doing something unique. Eventually things start to all sound the same and honestly it gets a little dull. I'm going to be completely honest... Whenever someone describes their music as "experimental" I can't help but cringe a little. Experimental usually only ends up one of two ways... It's something completely new and different taking the genre deeper into uncharted waters... or... it ends up more like a Human Centipede experiment and you feel like somebody just shit in your mouth. As luck would have it AnKou, a one man project from France is definitely the better of your two option and is offering a unique take on ambient black metal. I'm a big fan of artists who make use of instruments, sounds or styles that aren't generally found in traditional black metal. I'm an even bigger fan of artists who do it with as much skill AnKou. The following track from his SoundCloud account interested me right away and after listening to a few of his other offerings I had to give him a quick shout out. A damn near perfect atmospheric black metal sound coming out of Detroit Michigan. Skyggefigurrer  started following me (i.e. Cemetery Lament ) on SoundCloud and thus another foul gem from the underground was unearthed. Skyggefigurrer offers just the right mix of everything from lighting fast drums and guitar to slow trudging riffs mixed with incredible vocals.   So if you have been looking for a new underground artist to follow... O ne of the best things about the underground music scene, especially when it comes to genres like black metal and it's related sub genres is the diversity and creativity of the artists making music. There will always be the purists who go out of their way to make sure that every aspect of their sound stays firmly on that raw, dark, gloomy path laid down by the founding fathers of black metal. Then there are those who are a bit more adventurous blending a couple of safe themes together to create the nu-metal, 2nd or 3rd wave, ( insert trendy label here ) style of hybrid metal that somebody is sure to bitch about on the internet... and then there are the rare few who go above and beyond the archetypal tropes of a genre and create something truly unique unto itself. They blend themes and atmosphere that aren't typically found within the genre and somehow using a special brand of demonic sorcery make a one of a kind experience that is true to the genre yet stepping outside ...

How about a little late night blackened death metal to wake you up? Spell of Torment a great underground find from Oulu, Finland. Nothing to fancy going on here but some blazing fast guitar and drum riffs. Pretty tight sound and plenty of full blown metal goodness. 

Kicking around over on SoundCloud and unearthed Tash... According to their profile, Tash is a violent combination of black metal, death metal, and early grindcore. The lyrics primarily focus on fear, the occult, anti-christian themes, and violence. The music itself is usually very fast, uses extended range guitars and bass, and shrieking, guttural vocals. Tash was one of those bands that when I found them I stopped dead in my tracks and thought DAMN! where have these guys been? Apparently they have been in Sandford, USA but I wasn't looking there for bad ass black metal.  Recommended if you enjoy Behemoth, Emperor, Vader, Nile, Morbid Angel, and Dark Funeral.
