Death Notice - Kafirun, Eschaton

Image
Press Release by Seance Records Seance Records sets June 26th as the international release date for Kafirun's highly anticipated debut album, Eschaton. A deeply occultic work, Eschaton explores the end of the manifested world - an apocalypse that brings the end of all life and begets the opening of a new beginning through death - and opens this portal through thoroughly dizzying, manically majestic black metal. Finding that elusive balance between the resolutely raw 'n' primitive and the dynamically complex, Kafirun create a constantly shapeshifting maelstrom of macrocosm-crushing chaos and (dis)order. Across seven tracks within a concise 'n' cutting 42 minutes, the quartet portray a bold vision, and one whose maturity belies the band's brief existence so far. Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada, Kafirun sprung to deathly life in in 2014. The band's first release was an EP titled Death Worship - a title which has served to guide Kafi...

Death Notice - Akerbeltz, A Deed Without A Name

Image
Press Release by BlackSeed Productions Today, long-running black metal cult Akerbeltz premiere the new track, "A Deed Without A Name". The track hails from the band's long-awaited comeback album, Satanic, set for international release via BlackSeed Productions. Hailing from Spain, Akerbeltz was summoned as a black metal entity back in 1996 by Akerbeltz and Lilith, but later, Lilith abandoned the project due to musical differences. Nevertheless, she still continues collaborating with Akerbeltz from time to time in some recordings. So far, the following Akerbeltz albums have been released through the years: Spreading the Eternal Mayhem (1997), A Wave of Darkness (2000), Tabellae Defixionum (2001), Akerhell (2002), Never Deny From the Powers of Sorcery (2005), Infernuko Erreka (2010), and the upcoming Satanic for homeland label BlackSeed Productions. But, during that time, a lot of recordings have been released in different formats with bands from different la...

Cemetery Urn - Death Metal From A Land Down Under

Image
Cemetery Urn Cemetery Urn Hells Headbangers Release Date: June 9th 2017 Pre-Order HERE!!! "Australian Barbaric Death Metal" at least that is what Cemetery Urn has dubbed themselves. It must be an Australian thing because last year I saw Disentombed in concert and they call their particular style Australian Brutal Death... Apparently every death metal band from down under feels the need to create their own sub-genre for their specific music. I suppose when you come from a place with bugs the size of small dogs and Crocodile Dundee you can do whatever the fuck you want... But I digress...  Over the years it seems like most of the death metal acts have gone out of their way to  make the vocals as completely and totally guttural and as possible. Call me old fashion but listening to an entire album of monotone growl/puking into a microphone that sounds like it's lodged in your throat eventually gets a little boring. I don't care how fucking awesome your ...

Faustian Bargan Perhaps?

Image
Recently I made contact with a few of the smaller labels and distributors in the extreme metal world to see if there would be any interest in having Cemetery Lament do promotional features for upcoming artists and albums. I received a pretty good response from a few of them and I'm happy to announce that moving forward I will feature news and release information from several labels in the emerging underground scene.  Now before anyone worries that I'm already selling my soul in some kind of Faustian bargan to the man or going "mainstream"... pfft ... trust me when I say this won't change anything about Cemetery Lament or my focus on unsigned underground artists. Underground metal will always be the focus of my blog and no amount of money, power or sexual favors is going to change that... okay maybe the last one. My reason for striking such a devious deal was to provide you [the reader] with even more content from as many different sources as possible in the...

Serpentshrine ~ Besetting the Alter

Image
I have to be honest... Virginia Beach is the last place that comes to mind when I think about black metal but after listening to Serpentshrine's debut album Besetting the Alter (released January 2017) obviously I don't know shit about Virginia Beach.   Photo courtesy of Jessica Vivier Founded in 2015 by Bryan Bosch, bass/vocals and Connor Randlett, guitar (BS - Studio Drums) Serpentshrine was born out of the hope of blending melodic/minor harmonies with raw black metal. But when you listen to Besetting the Alter from end to end you realize that there is a hell of a lot more than just black metal going on here.  Right out of the gate I'm going to warn you that if you are a black metal "purist" (or just a douche) you're probably going to listen to Serpentshrine and bitch that it's not "real" black metal. I'll admit that you're probably right but that doesn't make you any less of a douche and you're probably missing ...

Digging Up Graves - Kalmankantaja

Image
Next to "traditional" black metal atmospheric/symphonic and depressive black metal are my favorite subgenres. Kalmankantaja keeps the raw lo-fi sound with plenty of tremolo and distortion yet manages to pull off the melodic feel of depressive black metal. Musically it's almost in perfect balance with vocals that are just as well blended. If you haven't checked this band out you are missing out.

Digging Up Graves... Krew

Found Krew while stalking around on SoundCloud... German blackened death metal that has that raw production sound I love to hear.

Unholy Shit!

Image
In the last 48 hours I have been contacted by no less than 26 bands that are interested in having their music featured on Cemetery Lament. When I started this project I never thought I would get that kind of response... Honestly I kinda figured nobody would give a shit. Wow was I fucking wrong!   Anyway... Long story short, at the moment I'm trying to get everything organized and coming up with a game plan so that I can get in touch with everyone who contacted me. If you haven't heard from me yet I probably just haven't got around to you but rest assured I'm working on it.  In the meanwhile if you are interested in contributing music to Cemetery Lament please check out the Submissions section of the blog and follow the instructions listed there. Having everyone contact me the same way will make things much easier and faster for everybody!  Cheers!

Dummu Borgir - Nuclear Blast USA

Image
Love'em or hate'em you have to admit that Dimmu Borgir are a driving force in the mainstream black metal world. Personally I've always like these guys. Nuclear Blast USA : "This DVD does not only contain the entire show of Oslo that the band performed together with Kringkastingsorkestret (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Choir), but also their bombastic performance at Wacken Open Air with the National Czech Symphonic Orchestra and an in-depth documentary with behind-the-scenes footage of the massive stage production in Norway. Prepare for three hours of raging symphonic black metal with almost 100 people on stage, songs from different band eras and unique visuals – a ritual as only DIMMU BORGIR could perform. Digging Up Graves... Carpe Noctem

Image
Digging deep in the vast unexplored wasteland of music on Bandcamp I unearthed some brutal shit from Iceland. If you haven't had a chance to check these guys out I would recommend giving them a listen. They don't seem to be very active at the moment but what is available online is pretty fucking good. Social Media Whore

Image
I've spent the last several hours creeping around the web like some sort of pervy ghoul setting up social media accounts for the blog. I've already made a few connections in groups around the net thanks to active black metal communities on Google+ and Facebook. A few artists have already contact me about featuring their work on the blog and I'm reaching out to several more who I think would be perfect fit for the blog. With any luck next week I will have a full schedule of reviews for the rest of the month and maybe even a few artist interviews lined up. Cheers!

Open Wide the Gates of Hell...

Image
Lets get a few things out of the way...  First, why would anyone make yet another blog dedicated to black metal and what the hell makes this blog any more interesting than the hundreds upon thousands of others out there? The answer is easy... absolutely fucking nothing. Cemetery Lament is just my little slice of hell on the web. I have created this blog as a way to explore and promote one of my favorite genres of music and nothing more.  Why should anyone care about this blog? Again this is easy... You probably don't care and that's just fine with me. This blog is explore, discover and gain a deeper appreciation of black metal. I'm not personally involved in the black metal scene beyond being a long time fan. I don't work in the music industry nor am I making any money for my reviews or opinions.  So who am I? Absolutely nobody... Just a longtime fan of black metal. I discovered black metal during my teenage years in the 90's and have been hooke...
